Thrifty Three: Traverse City, MI
Our first official Thrifty Three post where we will share three ways that we made each trip budget-friendly. Our goal is to create memorable trips without breaking the bank.
1. Book a budget-friendly, yet quaint Airbnb
We booked a single room and bathroom in a home located in Maple City, which was about 25 minutes outside of Traverse City. The owner of the home was a wonderful hostess and she made us feel welcome. She even had a sweet Labradoodle named Mocha. Her home was the perfect getaway, in the country, after being on the go all day. The best part, she had freshly brewed coffee every morning and a wonderful front porch to enjoy a slow morning.
2. Pack your own food
We grocery shopped and did some very simple meal prep prior to our trip. Our meal prep consisted of crockpot Italian chicken, chopped veggies and fresh fruit. Simple, yet nutritious.
Michael and I ate breakfast at the Airbnb every morning and packed lunch to enjoy on the beach each afternoon. We decided that we would eat dinner out most nights. I am a major foodie. Michael could care less. So this was the perfect balance for us. I also made sure to pack cheese, meat and crackers to enjoy with our wine.
3. Share a tasting
In total, we went to 6 wineries. I knew that I would buy a bottle at each (my parents are big into wine and I wanted to share with them), so we only bought a tasting, not a glass. Typically, we would order 2 tastings and get a pour of each wine listed. This worked well in order for us both to try a variety of wines. It was also the perfect way to not get the dreaded wine headache.
Bonus: Date night in
After two full days of fun tasting wine and being at the beach, we were pretty tired, so a date night in was the perfect solution to recharge. Our Airbnb had a perfect front porch that overlooked the fields across the street. We cozied in on her patio couches, opened a bottle of our favorite red wine from the day and snacked on veggies, fruit and Italian chicken wraps. As it got dark out, we brought out the laptop and watched a few episodes of The Sinner. We even popped some popcorn, Michael’s absolute favorite snack. It was my perfect evening because we were in bed by 10pm.
